Six years ago it started with a couple of guys, a music show, a few hundred bucks and a small pickup full of toys. Several thousand dollars and overflowing Mack trucks later, the man behind the Toy Drive has gotten some recognition.
From the United Way of the Midlands Website: "Thousands of people volunteer their time across the metro area each week; they support school and sports programs, mentoring services, food pantries, homeless shelters and medical clinics. Each deserves a personal thank you during 2010 National Volunteer Week! But on April 22, 1010, more than two dozen individuals were singled out to receive special honors at United Way’s 55th annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon."
Everyone knows that Lash and the other volunteers do this for the pure love of this cause, and never for glory or recognition. But it's really a great thing to know that the community realizes the work is being done, and by presenting these awards calls attention to the need for more. It also makes people go, "Who's the dude in the cowboy hat and sleeveless shirt with all the tattoos - I haven't seen HIM at church!"
Check out that dude getting the award:
